International Women's Day

Join Shepherd Neame in celebrating International Women’s Day!

This year’s event is taking place on Wednesday, March 8, so to mark the occasion, we take a look at how women have helped shape the world of beer and pubs through the ages and right up to today.

Did women create beer?

Beer is thought to have been invented by the Sumerians, who lived in what is now Iraq, around 8,000 BC and ancient tablets have been unearthed showing the original brewers were women. The Sumerians even had a goddess of beer, Ninkasi.

Feisty Females

For International Women’s Day, Shepherd Neame’s archivist and historian, John Owen, takes a look at some of the key women in the life of Shepherd Neame that have helped shape it over the years.
