LONG-SERVING SEASIDE LICENSEES TO RETIRE

Posted: 25th January 2018

After more than two decades behind the bar, the licensees of the Coach and Horses in Whitstable have announced their retirement.

Gordon Cooper and Jenny Dale began running the Shepherd Neame pub in 1995, and have taken the traditional High Street local from strength to strength.

Gordon, 60, said:

“Jenny and I met 28 years ago working in the hospitality trade. We were looking for a pub to run together, and as Jenny is originally from Whitstable, when we saw the Coach and Horses was available, we decided to go for it. It is a beautiful pub dating back to the 17th century, in the heart of the town, and we have purposely strived to retain its special character.

We refused to introduce a jukebox or pool table, our aim was always to focus on a traditional pub experience: great drinks and great conversation. We aimed to be family friendly and also dog friendly as we have two dogs of our own. We have absolutely loved our time here, but after 22 years we decided that it was time to put our feet up.”

The couple won’t be leaving Whitstable for good, as they are planning to keep their house in the town, but hope to spend more time at their property in France.

Gordon said:

“We really will miss life at the Coach and Horses, as our customers have become our friends. I always described it as the best job in Whitstable, getting to stand at the bar chatting to my mates. It has been an amazing 22 years, and we would like to thank everyone who has visited us or worked with us at the pub for their support and friendship over the years.”

Applications are currently being invited for the pub tenancy. Click here to find out more.
