Pub of the Week: The Caxton Arms, Brighton

Posted: 22nd May 2018

Enjoy fantastic food and drink in the relaxed, friendly surroundings of the Caxton Arms in Brighton.

Tucked away in a quiet residential street, yet just four minutes’ walk from the station, the pub is one of the city’s best-kept secrets.

Dating back to 1862, the pub still boasts original features such as oak-beamed ceilings and Victorian fireplaces, but has recently been stylishly redecorated in contemporary colours.

It has a split level garden, with a mezzanine balcony perfect for soaking up the sun, and a downstairs patio with extensive seating. The pub also boasts the only Bar Billiards table in central Brighton.

Off the garden is a large function room which can accommodate up to 40 people and has its own bar, making it a popular choice for private and work celebrations.

The Caxton Arms is renowned for its food, particularly its burgers. The pub currently offers 10 different types of burger, which are also available to takeaway, along with delicious sides such as Chipotle Corn on the Cob and its renowned Lobster Beans, braised white beans in tomato sauce flavoured with lobster oil and lobster meat.

In addition to its burgers, the pub also offers a delicious menu of small plates and main dishes including pan-fried sea bream and Cajun pork belly, along with an award-winning Sunday roast. The pub took fifth place in this year’s Brighton Restaurant BRAVO Sunday Roast Of The Year awards, and has been named the best roast dinner in town by RoastsInBrighton.com

Food is served from 4pm to 9pm Monday to Thursday; noon to 9pm on Friday and Saturday; and noon to 6pm on Sunday.

Along with great food, the pub prides itself on serving great drinks, including a wide selection of ales and lagers. Kentish beers Spitfire, Whitstable Bay Pale Ale, Bear Island East Coast Pale Ale and Whitstable Bay Blonde Lager are on draught, along with Symonds cider, Guinness and international lagers Hurlimann, Oranjeboom, San Miguel and Samuel Adams Boston Lager.
