Pub of the Week: The Anchor Inn, Hastings

Posted: 6th January 2016

The Anchor Inn is a great little pub in the heart of the Old Town area of Hastings, East Sussex, known for its excellent food and friendly welcome – truly a pub where “you are only a stranger here once”.

The second oldest pub in Hastings, and the oldest in the Old Town, The Anchor’s name is believed to originate from the fact the sea once came to the front door and boats would moor outside. Today, it is a lively community pub located safely inland in the old back lanes, amid the hustle and bustle of George Street.

Inside the bar is cosy and traditional with a small inglenook fireplace, wood burner and wooden floors. There is also some outside seating to the front for fairer days, ideally situated for watching the world go by.

The pub is well known for its excellent food, all home-cooked and boasting dishes such as whole turbot, seafood platters, steak pies, macaroni cheese, and a Sunday roast that has been described as the best roast in Hastings, with a choice of tender, quality meats, fresh veg and all the trimmings. Being close to the sea front, they have a regular supply of the best fresh local fish, which feature in their excellent daily specials. See their TripAdvisor page for more mouth-watering recommendations.

On the bar, you will find a choice of several well-kept cask ales, usually including a Shepherd Neame seasonal ale, plus a range of lagers, cider and a good selection of wines and soft drinks.

There are many reasons to plan a visit to Hastings and the surrounding ‘1066 country’ – whether it’s a wander along the seafront and a visit to the pier, a trip to the aquarium, or a walk through the Country Park with its breath-taking views.

The Old Town is an attraction in itself – full of unusual shops and little places to explore. Bring the whole family for a day out, wrapped up with a meal at the Anchor – but be sure to book, it’s a popular weekend pursuit!

If you enjoy live music, the pub is host to occasional relaxed live music on Sundays from around 6.30pm, with a taste of everything from folk to blues and jazz. The pub also takes part in the other events of the town, such as the ‘Jack in the Green’ celebrations.
