Pub of the Week: The Samuel Pepys, London

Posted: 7th September 2018

Great food and drink, together with amazing river views, make the Samuel Pepys a stunning pub in the heart of the City of London.

Housed in a nineteenth-century former tea warehouse, the Pepys has been serving thirsty City workers and eager sightseers since the early 1970s and offers a contemporary range of food and beer served in an historic setting.

The pub is named after the 17thCentury diarist Samuel Pepys, who recorded first hand such momentous events as the Great Fire of London and the Great Plague.

Pepys famously buried his Parmesan cheese to save it from the Great Fire of 1666, and given his love of the finer things in life he would have loved the pub named in his honour.

The Samuel Pepys offers an extensive menu of small plates such as breaded wholetail scampi and crispy fried squid, alongside a range of burgers, sandwiches and mains such as cod and chips, and beef steak and ale pie.

The pub is renowned for its hand-stretched stone-baked range of pizza, which ranges from pepperoni to a vegan option.

Food is served from 12 noon to 3pm and 6pm to 9.30pm Monday to Tuesday, and 12 noon to 3pm and 5pm to 9.30pm Wednesday to Friday.

Available at the bar on draught are Whitstable Bay Blonde Lager, Whitstable Bay Pale Ale, Spitfire Amber, Spitfire Lager, Hurlimann Lager, Bear Island East Coast Pale Ale and Samuel Adams Boston Lager. The pub also offers Angry Orchard and Orchard View ciders, in addition to the Spanish lager Mahou and the popular Italian lager Birra Moretti. Guinness is also available.

Also available is an extensive spirit range and a carefully selected wine list.

The pub shows BT Sports on the big screen, has the only shuffle board in the Square Mile and also has poker table for hire.

The pub opens from 12 noon to 11pm Monday to Friday. The pub is a popular weekend venue for weddings and private parties when it is available for exclusive use.
