Posted: 14th March 2022

It has a world famous gallery, some of the most beautiful beaches in the South East and a Hollywood director currently filming his latest blockbuster… now is the time to head to Thanet in Kent.

As film crews are busy shooting Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes’ film, Empire of Light, in Margate, a spotlight is falling on the area – and you could be part of the buzz, by joining the thriving hospitality world with Britain’s oldest brewer, Shepherd Neame.

Shepherd Neame’s varied range of pubs and hotels in Thanet have several superb roles where you could even find yourself serving the stars.

There are currently full and part time permanent vacancies available at some of the area’s most iconic venues, with flexible hours to suit all requirements. Job role levels vary and include Bar and Restaurant Team Members, Receptionists, Housekeepers and Chefs, up to Team Leaders, Assistant and Deputy Managers, Head Chefs and General Managers.

You could find yourself working at the recently refurbished Minnis Bay Bar and Brasserie, with a seaside location, popular with dog walkers. The busy Birchington site has views of jaunty beach huts and sandy shores as far as the picturesque Reculver Towers.

There are also seasonal vacancies coming up at nearby Broadstairs, once the holiday home of author Charles Dickens, where the Royal Albion Hotel stands proudly on the seafront, overlooking the awe-inspiring Viking Bay.

The hotel offers stylish accommodation, with 21 stunning bedrooms, a luxurious coffee lounge, bar and terrace, and an a la carte restaurant.

At Ramsgate, the Belle Vue Tavern in Pegwell Road, boasts the ‘Balcony of Kent’ at its rear, where you can enjoy some of the most spectacular sunsets, as well as some of the best sea views in the county.

And a stone’s throw away, standing on the magnificent clifftop at Kingsgate, Broadstairs, is the picture-perfect Botany Bay (pictured, right), a minute’s stroll from the beach, with 30 recently refurbished rooms, a welcoming lounge bar and an a la carte restaurant.

The area has long been popular with film crews and its magnificent views and iconic spots have featured in many a film and TV series.

BBC’s Dracula filmed at surfers’ paradise Joss Bay in Birchington in 2020, and ITV’s psychological thriller, Liar, filmed at Walpole Bay in Margate the same year, as well as at Shepherd Neame’s Zetland Arms in Kingsdown, Deal, just 16 miles away.

Many TV series have highlighted the area’s picturesque spots, including the BBC’s River Walks with former pop star turned farmer JB Gill in 2018; Fantasy Homes by the Sea in 2018; Sky Arts’ Landscape Artist of the Year in 2018, and ITV’s Britain’s Favourite Walks with Julia Bradbury in 2018.

For small screen buffs who want to delve further back, the BBC’s cult sci fi classic Blake’s 7 filmed at Quex Park in Birchington in 1978.

Shelley Castle, Pub Business Recruitment Manager, who herself lives in the area, said: “Thanet has so much to offer and is a great place to work and live. It has fabulous beaches and sights to see; plenty to do with galleries and amusements and, of course, a thriving hospitality sector, with pubs, restaurants and hotels to suit all tastes. We have some great opportunities currently available across our Thanet sites, and are looking for talented staff to join our teams. If it’s good enough for a Hollywood director like Sam Mendes, what are you waiting for?”

In addition to permanent roles, Shepherd Neame will soon be recruiting for temporary seasonal team members to help meet increased business demand in this thriving area during the summer months. Our seasonal roles will be available from June to September and more information will be available at our seasonal recruitment open days which will take place after Easter.
