Pub of the Week: The Divers Arms, Herne Bay

Posted: 12th March 2019

The Divers Arms, prominently located on the seafront, is one of Herne Bay’s most popular and historic pubs.

It was built and opened in 1847, the brainchild of one William Hooper Wood. Wood had been a smuggler, caught and transported to Australia at some point in the 1830s. Upon his return he became a salvage diver, making his fortune in the process and investing much of it in this handsome and quirky old pub.

Recently refurbished, the Divers is one of the Bay’s best known live music venues, with live acts appearing Friday and Saturday evening and a live pianist in action on Sunday lunchtime. A popular Sunday evening quiz is staged monthly.

The pub also enjoys a fine reputation for its traditional food menu. Dishes such as fish and chips and a hearty ploughman’s always go down well here, and there are also a range of burgers alongside a selection of lighter bar snacks.

Booking is highly recommended for the pub’s Sunday roast, which is served with all the trimmings.

The pub has long enjoyed a good reputation for the quality of its cask ale, which line-up at the bar alongside a selection of premium lagers from Britain’s oldest brewer.
