Pub of the Week: The Deal Hoy, Deal

Posted: 22nd January 2019

The Deal Hoy is a traditional and charming backstreet local, just a short stroll from the seafront and also convenient for the popular Deal Maritime and Local History Museum.

There’s been a pub on this site since at least the 1830s, and it takes its name from a traditional Kentish sailing boat which would once have been used to transport goods and people to larger vessels moored offshore. Effectively a water taxi, to hail one of these small boats you exclaimed ‘a hoy there!’

Today’s pub has a distinctly nautical air about it and remains a popular community hub. In winter a log fire burns reassuringly in the bar area while the large beer garden is always popular when the weather is permitting.

The pub enjoys a great reputation for its range of delicious pizza. These can be eaten in or taken away, and are made to order and cooked in an authentic wood-fired oven, the only one of its kind in town.

Pouring at the bar are a great range of cask ales and premium lagers from Britain’s oldest brewer.
