NEW BAR CELEBRATES THE SPITFIRE AND KENT’S ROLE IN THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN

A new bar is opening at one of Kent’s most historic country pubs, celebrating the iconic Spitfire and the brave pilots and ground crew who helped win the Battle of Britain.

The Bell, Smarden, which dates back to the reign of Henry VIII, was a popular haunt for the RAF during the war and continues to be frequented by modern day Spitfire pilots flying out of Headcorn Aerodrome.

On Remembrance Day, 11/11/17  at 7.30pm the official opening of the Bell’s Spitfire Bar will be marked with a 1940’s themed evening, featuring a chance to see a working Spitfire engine, entertainment from vocal harmony group the Spitfire Sisters, 1940s fancy dress, a DJ and free buffet and a silent auction.

All profits from the £10 ticket price and the silent auction will go to the RAF Benevolent Fund.

Bell landlord Adrian Warren said:

“This pub was popular with Spitfire pilots during the war and still is today, we’re big supporters of the RAF Benevolent Fund and wanted to do something that would help them and reflect this important part of our heritage.”

The bar has been redecorated to incorporate lots of Spitfire and related aviation memorabilia, detailing the part played by local airfields during the war.
