Pub of the Week: Mabel’s Tavern, London

Posted: 13th December 2016

Tucked away behind the Euston Road, between King's Cross St Pancras and Euston railway stations, is Mabel's Tavern – a traditional English pub serving a wide variety of superb beers and freshly prepared food.

There’s a covered seating area on the quiet street outside, and inside there’s a well-stocked bar with wooden floors and leather seating – the perfect place to enjoy a pint of the pub’s highly regarded ales. Landlord Dave Berry won the Beer Hero Award at Shepherd Neame’s 2016 Pub Awards, where the judges noted that the ales were of “outstanding quality”. This award sits well alongside the pub’s regular awards from CAMRA.

Mabel’s also serves great pub food, and offers offer a diverse menu of delicious, fresh meals throughout the day - from lighter plates and starters to sumptuous sandwiches, gourmet burgers and true pub classics like traditional fish and chips, ham and eggs and steak and ale pie. There’s an international flavour to things too, with some cracking curries and other Eastern inspirations on the menu.

Sports fans are guaranteed great live action, with both Sky Sports and BT Sports regularly showing rugby, football and more.

Mabel’s has a haunted history. The tavern apparently takes its name from a local woman, Mabel Macinelly, who was born in Dublin, Ireland. Not much is known about Mabel except that she owned a cat called Felix and she died in the 1970s. Since her death, she has been known to revisit the pub - on one occasion, she called the landlady's name repeatedly in the early hours of the morning, and she regularly operates the dumb waiter, which is a little eerie as the dumb waiter was removed several years ago. Mabel’s granddaughter recently visited the Tavern when researching her family. If you know anything about Mabel and her life in Dublin or London, we would be fascinated to hear from you.
