Pub of the Week: The Aviator, Sheerness

Posted: 8th December 2015

If there is one pub that is wholeheartedly ready for Christmas, it has to be The Aviator, on the Isle of Sheppey.  This popular pub, which in the summer months is well known for being adorned with flowers of all types and colours, is now sporting a display of a different kind – a festive array of Christmas lights!

A few years ago the local Minster-on-Sea Rotary Club acquired the lights and approached The Aviator with a view to the pub putting on a display. The sight has proved so popular that it is now an annual event, raising money for charitable causes in the local community.

As well as an enthusiastic approach to Christmas, the Aviator is well known for its display of items relating to the area’s fascinating role in the history of powered flight.  Inside the pub you will find authentic uniforms, photographs and artefacts tell the story of how Sheppey was a home of the early flying pioneers such as Charles S Rolls, and the Wright brothers.

The Aviator is a spacious, comfortable pub serving a choice of good quality cask ales, lagers and wines, along with an excellent range of pub food to suit all tastes and appetites. Choose from sandwiches, pub classics, delicious burgers in brioche buns, and steaks, served to your liking and with a choice of sides.

Take advantage of the very popular two courses for £9.95 Meal Deal, or visit on a Wednesday for Steak Night. There is also a special ‘Young Diners’ menu if you are bringing the family, and a play area outside if the weather permits. Meals can be taken in the spacious bar, or separate restaurant, which is also available for private hire.

The Aviator is a hive of activity, with a charity quiz night every Monday, ukulele club every other Tuesday (turn up and play), football and darts teams, and occasional live music. The pub is at the centre of the community, and raises considerable sums each year for local causes.

This includes events such as the annual Beer Festival in August, which this year served over 40 real ales, raised over £12,000, and involved the addition of an inflatable pub to extend capacity!

Just a short drive from the bridge onto the island, The Aviator is the perfect stop off on any visit to Sheppey, and ideally situated for all the popular attractions, such as Minster Abbey, Elmley Nature Reserve, Blue Town Heritage Centre and the beaches at Minster and Leysdown. Or, just bring the family over for a dinner, and take a peek at the stunning display of Christmas lights.
