Herne Bay Pub Reopens After £210,000 Refurbishment

Posted: 11th December 2015

The Four Fathoms in Herne Bay has reopened after a major £210,000 transformation.

The historic town centre pub, which dates back to the mid-1800s, closed to the public at the start of October. The extensive programme of work included repainting the pub inside and out, installing new flooring, restructuring and refitting the bar counter and revamping the toilets. A new snug area has been created to create a more intimate space for drinkers, and there is new furniture and décor throughout, aimed at creating a contemporary yet comfortable feel. The exterior courtyard also has new seating, fencing and plants.

The pub is being run by husband and wife team Paul and Sam Collier, who recently moved back to Herne Bay after running pubs in Somerset and Wales for six years.

Paul, 52, said:

We could see that the Four Fathoms had huge potential, as it was such a beautiful building in a great location near the beach and the station, and this refurbishment has really made the most of its unique features. We have already had lots of great feedback from customers about the new look, which is fantastic.

The pub is offering food for the first time, so the kitchen has been refurbished, with a separate restaurant area created for diners. Customers can choose from a menu of traditional pub classics and bar snacks with a contemporary twist.

We have already taken quite a few group bookings for Christmas, which is really encouraging, and are hopeful that more people will come as word spreads that we are now offering food. Our aim is to offer traditional pub food, but done really well, at an affordable price.

Shepherd Neame’s director of retail and tenanted operations Nigel Bunting said:

Our aim with this project was to retain the building’s historic features while offering a contemporary feel and high quality finish, and also provide the facilities for a food offer to be introduced. We are very pleased with the results, and are sure that with experienced licensees Paul and Sam in charge, the Four Fathoms will prove a huge success.
