Pub of the Week: The Parrot, Canterbury

Posted: 9th March 2016

As well as being one of the oldest pubs in Canterbury, The Parrot is also housed in one of the oldest buildings in the city.

Built on Roman foundations and dating back to the 14th Century, this grade II listed pub has a charming period exterior with plenty of original features inside - oak beams, panelled walls, old brickwork and fine examples of medieval craftsmanship in the upstairs restaurant.

With three log burning stoves, you can be sure of a warm welcome from general manager Francis & the team, whether you choose to enjoy a pint of cask ale at the bar, cosy into a corner for a chat with friends, or treat yourself to a bite to eat from their extensive menus.

The food at The Parrot seeks to provide something for everyone’s tastes and appetites. Whether it is nibbles to accompany your drinks, a freshly-made sandwich for a quick working lunch, one of their impossibly juicy gourmet burgers, or a more substantial main meal, you’ll find something to suit.

Choose from impressive modern British dishes such as confit duck leg, devilled crab, or forest mushroom macaroni and cheese; or keep it simple with locally smoked ham, egg and chips or farmhouse sausage and mash. All dishes are freshly chef-prepared, using locally sourced ingredients wherever possible, and portions are generous. Head Chef Joe and his team definitely don’t want you to leave hungry!

On the bar you will find a choice of quality cask ales, lagers and ciders, an excellent range of wines from around the world, plus all your usual spirits and soft drinks.

Cask ale drinkers will be excited to visit during the regular Ale Exchange weekends when The Parrot showcases a range of ales from selected local and national breweries, alongside the many Shepherd Neame favourites stocked year-round. The next two dates for your diary are the weekends commencing Friday 22nd April & Friday 20th May.

With The Parrot being situated just a short walk from Northgate in Canterbury, it is ideally situated for combining with a shopping trip, visit to the Cathedral, pre-theatre dinner, or one of the city’s many other attractions.
