Fresh New Start for Historic City Pub

Posted: 11th March 2016

A new manager has been appointed at historic 16th century pub the Bishops Finger in Canterbury.

Originally from Wales, Joe Palombella discovered his passion for the hospitality industry while working at a pub part-time as a student in Liverpool.

Joe, 28, said:

I was studying building surveying at Liverpool John Moores, but I found that I really enjoyed the atmosphere and variety of working in the pub, and decided to pursue it as a career after completing my degree.

Joe worked his way up to deputy manager over the next five years, before moving to run two pubs in Cannock and Stoke-on-Trent for two and a half years. He started at the Bishops Finger at the end of January.

Joe said:

I had heard that Shepherd Neame was a good company to work for, and when my application was successful and they offered me the Bishops Finger, I couldn’t believe my luck. It is such a beautiful pub, and my wife and I have an eight-month-old son, so we were really delighted to move somewhere as picturesque as Canterbury.

The Bishops Finger is open from 12 noon to midnight, Monday to Thursday, from 12noon to 1am on Friday, from 11am to 1am on Saturday, and from 12noon to midnight on Sunday.

It is particularly popular with sport lovers as there are five large screen televisions, including one outside, showing all the latest sports action on Sky and BT.

Joe said:

We have a great mix of people in the pub throughout the day and evening, from colleagues wanting a quick bite to eat, to sports fans watching the game, and friends enjoying a drink. We are only a short walk from the city centre, and our aim is to be the friendly pub where people from all walks of life can enjoy a relaxed get-together.
