Pub of the Week: The Crown, Blackheath

Posted: 19th April 2016

The Crown, Blackheath is a lively, traditional pub which began its life in the 16th Century as a coaching inn, serving refreshment to travellers to and from Dover and London.

Today, its proximity to the heath, with its many fairs, circuses and public events, make it a busy watering hole for tourists, office workers and residents alike.

The pub is also close to Greenwich Park, through which visitors can walk to the Royal Observatory and National Maritime Museum.

Inside, the pub is bright and airy and has a smart, contemporary feel, with wooden floors and period features.

On warmer days, there are tables to the front of the pub where you can enjoy a drink in the sunshine, and soak up some of Blackheath’s cosmopolitan atmosphere.

New to the pub is Todd’s Wine Bar, a recently added upstairs room offering a great selection of wines from around the world, as well as premium spirits, including a wide selection of whiskies and gins. There is also a "tapas style" tasting menu, with a selection of individual and sharing dishes to compliment your wine, including salt and pepper dusted whitebait, calamari, and patatas bravas.

Downstairs, the bar serves good quality classic pub dishes, all freshly prepared using locally-sourced, seasonal ingredients whenever possible. Choose from a range of popular favourites, such as sausage and mash, burgers and fish and chips. There is also a dedicated children’s menu for younger visitors.

On the bar, you will find a choice of cask ales, international lagers, ciders, and an excellent choice of wines.

The pub hosts occasional live entertainment, and there is also a pub quiz upstairs in Todd’s every Sunday night from 8.30 – just turn up and join in!
