Historic Pub Reopens After £75,000 Refurbishment

Posted: 20th May 2016

Traditional Victorian pub The Adelaide in Teddington officially reopened on Monday, May 9, after a £75,000 refurbishment.

The historic Shepherd Neame pub, which dates back to 1863, closed during the three week project, which included changing some walls to exposed brick, and laying natural wood flooring to create a more rustic feel in keeping with its long heritage.

Stylish new lighting, décor and furniture has been introduced throughout, and the bar has been subtly reshaped to allow more space for customers. The exterior of the pub has also been completely repainted, including new signwriting, and its large attractive garden has new furniture, along with a barbecue and new outdoor TV.

The Adelaide has a first floor function room, which can seat 35, or accommodate up to 60 standing. It also serves a range of delicious bar snacks and traditional pub dishes, and the pub’s kitchen was refurbished as part of the project. Food is available from 12noon to 3pm and 6pm to 9pm, Monday to Saturday, and from 12noon to 5pm on Sunday.

Licensee Mariana Carciun, 36, who began working at The Adelaide in 2006, and took it over in 2013, said:

I am thrilled with the pub’s new look. It is a beautiful building, and this work has really made the most of its potential. We have already had lots of positive feedback from customers, which is fantastic.

Local dignitaries and residents were invited to the launch celebration, with the first pint pulled by longstanding pub regular Roy Norwood, 71, who lives locally.

Shepherd Neame’s chief executive Jonathan Neame attended the event, and to mark the occasion presented a cheque for £500 to Shooting Star Chase, a local children’s hospice charity. It was collected by charity ambassador David Lyon.

Jonathan Neame said:

This refurbishment project has given The Adelaide a stylish new look while retaining its character and atmosphere, and we are sure the pub will continue to go from strength to strength.
