Historic Village Pub Unveils New Function Room

Posted: 2nd September 2016

The George Inn in the picturesque village of Leeds near Maidstone, famed for its beautiful castle, has a new function room. The historic Shepherd Neame pub, which dates back to 1652, has been run by licensee Deborah Tharp for the past three years.

The George is the only pub in the village, and Deborah had been hosting some small private functions in its separate dining room, but it reduced the space available for regular customers. In order to meet demand, she decided to undertake a joint project with Shepherd Neame, at a cost of £40,000, to turn a first floor storage area into a function room.

Work started in May and the new room has just been unveiled. Its original wood panelled walls have been retained, along with the oak beams in the room’s high ceiling, which have been decorated with twinkling fairy lights to create an intimate feel. A new bar has also been built in the corner of the room, using rustic wood in keeping with its traditional look.

Deborah said:

The George Inn is the hub of the village, and there was a lot of demand from the local community for a space which they could hire for small private events. As it is such a traditional pub, this was the only way we could expand.

The room can accommodate 40 guests sitting or 50 standing, and has already been booked for a variety of events including a Christening celebration and 50th birthday party. Deborah has also introduced a new buffet menu, starting at £5.95 per head.

Mum-of-two Deborah grew up in Maidstone, and started work at the pub nine years ago, managing the pub before being given the opportunity to take it on as a licensee. She said:

The George is a very special pub, and I’m thrilled that we have been able to create this beautiful new space for customers to enjoy, while retaining its original features and traditional feel.
