As it starts to get colder outside, there are few things better than heading to a cosy Kent pub for a traditional Sunday roast. Here are eight of our favourites. Due to their popularity, booking is strongly advised.
1. Bonny Cravat, Woodchurch
With three cosy fireplaces, two large bars and separate dining area, The Bonny Cravat in Woodchurch is a traditional, family friendly pub you can really make yourself at home in. Their Sunday Carvery is extremely popular and much-loved by regulars, with a choice of meats, an abundance of fresh veg and all the trimmings. Locals to the pub say they haven’t cooked a roast in years!
2. Bull, Tunbridge Wells
Homely and inviting, The Bull is a cosy, traditional pub serving up first-class food and fine ales in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Visitors describe their roast as “the best Sunday roast” around (TripAdvisor) and with a choice of roasted meats, perfectly cooked veg and crisp roast potatoes, it’s not hard to see why. Afterwards, relax in front of their roaring real fire and soak up some Sunday vibes.
3. Chestfield Barn, near Whitstable
A warm welcome awaits you at the Chestfield Barn, an historic 14th Century bar and restaurant in the heart of Kent. On Sunday, enjoy a choice of roast meats such as topside of beef, leg of lamb or slow roast pork belly, with real gravy and all your favourite trimmings. With food served 12 – 8pm, it’s one to remember for that late, lazy Sunday lunch.
4. Hampton Inn, Herne Bay
With uninterrupted sea views on three sides of the pub, giving a near 360 degree vista, there are few pubs in the UK that can match the Hampton Inn for its idyllic location. Becoming increasingly well known for its food, on Sundays the menu offers traditional delights such as roast pork with stuffing and crackling, with fresh veg and Yorkshires, as well as fresh fish dishes, reflecting their proximity to the coast, and a range of vegetarian options. A brisk walk along the seafront afterwards is optional!
5. Plough, Lewson Street
A traditional village pub, the Plough at Lewson street is well known for its excellent food and drink. On Sundays you can enjoy a choice of traditional roast meats with all the trimmings, or opt for something a little different, such as confit duck leg with colcannon, or fillet of plaice with hasselback potatoes and pea puree. There’s laid back live music from 2.30, so you can sit back and relax after your meal.
6. Ye Olde Beverlie, Canterbury
This beautiful old pub in St Stephen’s Green offers a relaxed atmosphere, with a cosy real fire on colder days. The menu here has a distinctly Mexican flavour, with tacos and sizzling fajitas, but also offers pub classics, burgers and sandwiches so it’s ideal if you need somewhere that offers choice for everyone. On Sundays you can also choose a classic roast, with a choice of rib of Kentish beef, half roast chicken, loin of pork or mushroom and pistachio nut roast.
7. Walnut Tree, Aldington
Situated opposite the cricket green in the historic village of Aldington, this 14th Century pub retains many period features, including oak beams and an inglenook fireplace. It is well known locally for its excellent food, and very affordable prices. On Sundays, it is popular with families gathering together to enjoy a tasty traditional roast.
8. The Granville, Canterbury
The Granville is a welcoming traditional pub, with comfy sofas, spacious bar and dining space, and central fireplace. Crowned the regional winner for the South of England in the Best British Roast Dinner competition in 2016, the Granville is a must-visit for Sunday lunch aficionados. There isn’t much that doesn’t come with it your choice of roast meat or vegetarian option – expect sage & onion stuffing, Yorkshires, buttered peas, cauliflower cheese made with Kentish Blue, and more.
In addition to the above, many more of our pubs offer a delicious Sunday lunch.
