The malt kiln

While today the brewery receives its barley ready-malted, originally it would have been malted on site. The restored kiln that can be visited at the Faversham brewery dates from around 1840 and was used up until around 1908 when it was made obsolete by advances in malting technology.

Germinating grains would be spread out on floors set above the kiln and the fires would then be lit in the kiln underneath using coke or coal as fuel. The kilning process would take between one and two days.

Next stop, the brewhouse.
