A popular down-to-earth pub, The Sportsman is situated opposite beautiful Pegwell Bay, with views out into the English Channel, while its back garden overlooks St Augustine golf course.
Dating back to 1750, the pub used to be a halfway house for stagecoaches travelling between Ramsgate and Sandwich. Smugglers are believed to have used its cellar, connected to the area extensive network of tunnels, to bring in contraband from France. Locals report strange noises and items being moved, possibly by the ghosts of sailors and pirates who met a bloody end at the pub.
Current tenants Ronnie and Teresa Kirk assure you a 'grand' Irish welcome whether your visit is for one of our expertly kept ales, a glass of wine overlooking Pegwell Bay or St Augustines golf club or a bite to eat from our pub menu where all food is fresh, local & always cooked freshly to order.
