The Crown & Sceptre is a handsome town centre pub dating back just over 100 years, and typical of turn of the century architecture.
It is a friendly little place, loved by the locals and welcoming to newcomers, with thriving pub sports teams, BT Sport for Premier League Football and Rugby matches, and late opening on Fridays and Saturdays.
One of its most interesting and unusual features is the outdoor skittle alley in the small, attractive courtyard garden, full of flowers year round, with lots of comfy seating and a covered smoking area - a lovely place to pass a summer's evening or while away an hour with a pint or a delicious coffee and your newspaper on a sunny Sunday morning.
New tenant John 'Tony' Tarason works with his wife Maggie and three adult children to make this not just a pub for the local 'regulars', but a friendly place to be whether you are six or eighty-six, they regard it as very much a community space and are delighted to offer it to local clubs and societies for meetings, celebrations and 'occasions' like post-Christening or funeral buffets. This aspect of the pub is set to expand dramatically with the introduction of a trade kitchen (keep an eye on the menu section) and keenly priced daytime cafe offering. Sunday lunches will commence on Mothering Sunday 2014, often with live music from local musicians to follow if there is not a big football match to consider!
Live and recorded music will be a regular feature, with the emphasis on using local artists and performers. The music offerings will include live bands, solo performers, Karaoke and Open Mic nights. If you like a little activity with your drink, try darts, table football, x-box or skittles or failing that borrow a pack of cards from the bar or watch the football or rugby on BT Sport. There is even a library for those who are never happier than with a drink in one hand and a book in the other, - you are welcome to borrow the stock! A calendar of events is available on the events section of the website and our new facebook page will keep you updated.
Children are well catered for and always welcome, with art materials. books, and other indoor activities while outside they will find sand and water play, a small climbing frame with toddler slide and other things to keep them busy while the grown-ups have a well earned drink. Tea and coffee are served all day with free low-sugar squash drinks for the little ones.
Groups already active at the Crown and Sceptre are our Thursday Pub Quiz teams, Knit and Natter on Tuesday afternoons from 14.00, Dice and Digital is our bi-weekly Monday night Fantasy Gaming assembly with board and computer games to try or join in with, a great place to get together and make new friends or compete with your own group at everything from vintage Dungeons and Dragons to the latest fantasy computer and console titles played on the big screen t.v. plus food and drink to keep the most active elf-maiden or orc warrior at the top of her or his game. The second Sunday of every month sees a meeting of local tropical fish fanciers, (well we did say a variety of activities), but we still have plenty of quiet times available either just for people to get together and socialise or for more structured events. Wednesday night is ladies night, with darts in the winter and women's skittles in the summer, not taken seriously but more of a social occasion, while weekend afternoons are perfect for bringing children and grandchildren to play in the pub garden or even get a little friendly rivalry sorted out through a skittles match. In fine weather the barbecue comes out.
