A popular down-to-earth pub, The Sportsman is known for its selection of grills and steaks. It is situated opposite beautiful Pegwell Bay, with views out into the English Channel, while its back garden overlooks St Augustine golf course.
Dating back to 1750, the pub used to be a halfway house for stagecoaches travelling between Ramsgate and Sandwich. Smugglers are believed to have used its cellar, connected to the area extensive network of tunnels, to bring in contraband from France. Locals report strange noises and items being moved, possibly by the ghosts of sailors and pirates who met a bloody end at the pub.
Now The Sportsman is popular both with the local community and passers-by. It has a separate steakhouse restaurant and a function room, and hosts regular music, quiz, bingo and poker nights.
