SHEPHERD NEAME GARDEN OF THE YEAR 2011
Nestled in the picturesque Weald of Kent, the Peacock Inn is a peg-tiled, weather-boarded country pub dating back to1397 and is steeped in character and atmosphere.
With exposed brickwork, beams, tiles and wooden floors, the history of this ancient pub seeps from every nook and cranny. Named after the peacocks that strutted around the nearby Glassenbury Estate, the pub has plenty of feathers and memorabilia among the brass and decorative hops.
In winter, two fires welcome customers, one in the striking inglenook, while smokers gather round the woodburning stove in an area overlooking the attractive gardens.
Food is of a traditional pub fare variety and customers can now tuck into a hearty plate of ham, egg and chips, rather than the peacock pie once served. The Sunday roasts are extremely popular.
Regulars include the Weald of Kent Morris Men and vintage car and motorbikes enthusiasts on tour.
And there is a ghost. A number of customers claim to have seen a mysterious “friendly” lady passing before the fireplace.
