The Sportsman is a Michelin-starred gastropub tucked away in the quiet backwaters of the Seasalter marshes – a bleak but beautiful landscape outside the fashionable seaside town of Whitstable. The modest hosts wear their fame lightly but the Michelin star awarded to the restaurant says it all – not to mention the regular praise from all the other major food guides. The food is multi award-winning and customers travel for many miles to visit. The cuisine could be described as Modern British and all the produce used is as local as possible, including widgeon and lamb from the surrounding marshes. The Sportsman has an original wine list, with a great choice of wine by the glass as well .
The decor is clean, fresh and wholesome with a quietly buzzy ambience, and in winter there is a real fire to add warmth and atmosphere. Outside there is a seaside beer garden, plenty of parking, and a conservatory area bridging the gap, for days when it is just too blustery for sitting outside.
