Shepherd Neame recognises that a key element of a successful pub is the professionalism of the Tenant and staff. We encourage Tenants to join the British Institute of Innkeeping – a professional body for the licensed retail sector – and to take advantage of courses and activities provided.
We recommend all applicants who have never been in the licensed trade before complete the British Institute of Innkeeping Pre Entry Awareness Training (PEAT) which is completed on-line at http://www.bii.org/home
A range of training is available for all Licensees. It is designed to ensure that the opportunities and risks of running pubs are clear and to equip Licensees with the necessary skills, knowledge and ability to maximise the profitability of their business. This is centred on two key areas: the principles and practices of business management in a pub and the legal responsibilities of a Licensee. Further support and advice is available to Licensees through their Business Development Manager.

There is also the chance for every Licensee to become a Master of Beer – Shepherd Neame’s unique qualification which enhances greater understanding of our ales and lagers, developing the knowledge to promote the products you sell, and ensuring the highest standards in maintaining and serving the perfect pint.
All workshops are run by trainers with experience within the industry. We deliver workshops which, where possible, will accredit Licensees with industry-recognised qualifications, and work closely with awarding bodies such as the British Institute of Innkeeping and Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, to ensure that all workshops deliver the most up-to-date information.
Workshops are also available at a reduced rate for the Licensee’s staff.
