Shepherd Neame recognises that a key element of a successful pub is the professionalism of its licensees. We encourage licensees to join the British Institute of Innkeeping (BII) – a professional body for the licensed retail sector – and to take advantage of courses and activities provided.
We recommend that all applicants who have never been in the licensed trade before complete the BII Pre Entry Awareness Training (PEAT) online at http://www.bii.org/home
A range of training is available for all licensees. It is designed to ensure that the opportunities and challenges of running pubs are clear and to equip licensees with the necessary skills, knowledge and ability to maximise the profitability of their business.
This is centred on two key areas: the principles and practices of business management in a pub and the legal responsibilities of a licensee. Further support and advice is available to licensees through their business development manager.
Shepherd Neame offers five workshops for licensees which are mandatory unless the licensee holds a comparable qualification:
- BII Level 2 Award for Personal Licence Holders (APLH)
- BII Level 2 Award in Beer and Cellar Quality (ABCQ)
- CIEH Level 2 Food Safety in Catering
- CIEH Level 2 Health and Safety in the Workplace
- Financial Management for Tenants
All workshops are run by trainers with experience within the industry, and, whenever possible, will accredit licensees with industry-recognised qualifications.
We work closely with awarding bodies such as the BII and Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH), to ensure that all workshops deliver the most up-to-date information.
Optional workshops for tenants include:
- CIEH Level 3 Food Safety in Catering
- CIEH Level 2 Emergency First Aid
- CIEH Level 2 Fire Safety
Licensees are charged for the workshops, available at a reduced rate for staff.
Shepherd Neame has just launched a range of online courses, available to all licensees.
Run in connection with the CPL Training Group, the low cost, comprehensive suite of training modules can help licensees ensure that they and their staff are fully compliant in their legal responsibilities as well as customer service, all aspects of product knowledge, cash handling, stock and profit.
Current courses include: Conflict Management; Venners Stock Management; Age Verification; Coffee Skills and Disability Awareness.
There is also the chance for every licensee to become a Master of Beer – Shepherd Neame’s unique qualification which enhances greater understanding of the brewery’s ales and lagers. Maximise beer sales by developing the knowledge to better promote the products you sell, and ensure the highest standards in maintaining and serving the perfect pint. A fee applies.
