Shepherd Neame have strong links with Dover District Council, whose area is the part of South East England that is nearest to mainland Europe. The Council's area includes three main towns, Dover, Deal and Sandwich as well as dozens of picturesque villages and hamlets which make East Kent such an attractive place to live and visit. The main town in the district is Dover - internationally famous for the White Cliffs and Dover Castle. The Port of Dover is the busiest passenger ferry port in the world. The town has been dubbed ”The Gateway to Britain“ and has been the country's frontline since before the Roman invasion. Ten miles to the north of Dover lies the coastal town of Deal, which is home to numerous small businesses and many Shepherd Neame pubs including The Royal Hotel, with 22 en-suite bedrooms, a restaurant and bar with outside decking overlooking the sea. The last of the main towns is Sandwich. Pfizer Pharmaceutical company is based on the outskirts of the town bringing employment to thousands of the area's residents. Sandwich also boasts two excellent golf courses, Princes and Royal St Georges, which regularly hosts the British Open Championships including the 2003 Open. From Dover, ferries and catamarans provide many crossings to France and Belgium every day. The Channel Tunnel terminal at Cheriton is 20minutes away and Ashford International Station for the Eurostar service is only 30 minutes away. The expanding Kent International Airport at Manston is near Sandwich. Gatwick can be reached in 90 minutes and Heathrow in 2 hours.
