Canterbury, a UNESCO world heritage site, sits on the River Stour in one of the most attractive corners of rural Kent. Canterbury Cathedral dominates the city skyline and making a pilgrimage to Canterbury was an important part of medieval life. Pilgrims flocked to the city to visit the shrine of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Becket, who was murdered in Canterbury cathedral. Today Canterbury welcomes people from all over the world. As well as the many attractions and ancient buildings, Canterbury is the home of Kent County Cricket, with home matches played at the St Lawrence Ground. Canterbury Rugby Club continue their success, with home games played at their ground in Merton Lane. The city is also home to two excellent universities namely the University of Kent and Canterbury Christchurch University. Shepherd Neame have a wide variety of pubs in the City Centre and around Canterbury. Many of the pubs serve delicious food prepared from fresh, local ingredients and a number of them have letting accommodation.
