The traditional feel has also been enhanced by retaining the original bar counter, along with the ceramic glazed tiles and etched glass at the front of the pub.<br /><br />The garden has enjoyed a major revamp, with a new beach hut-themed covered seating area as its centrepiece. The vibrantly striped structure is situated on the new wooden decking area.<br /><br /><img alt="" class="right" src="http://cdn.shepherdneame.co.uk/sites/default/files/uploads/Blog/blog_half_Smack%2C%20Whitstable%20%283%29%20%281280x853%29.jpg" style="width: 280px; height: 187px; float: right;" />The pub’s exterior has been repainted with the addition of handpainted signwriting and a bespoke swing sign. The space at the front of the pub has also been converted from a parking area to customer seating. Work started in January, and the pub reopened on Friday, March 27.<br /><br />Charles, who also runs Shepherd Neame’s Old City Bar in Canterbury, along with three other pubs in the city, said: “I live in Canterbury, so I know Whitstable well, and have always really liked the town as it is so quirky and bohemian. When The Smack became available, I was delighted to be able to take on such an interesting, historic pub. It is in a central location, just a short stroll from the seafront, and also has a fantastic large garden.”<br /><br />The pub will have a mixture of four full-time and part-time staff, managed by Tiffany Kirtikar, who lives in Whitstable and has extensive industry experience. It will open from 11.30am to 11.30pm, Sunday to Thursday, and 11.30am to 12.30am, Friday and Saturday. <br /><br />Food isn’t currently available, but Charles is hoping to have a menu of traditional pub classics and snacks available from May. He is also hoping to introduce a permanent barbecue in the garden, and invite customers to bring along their own food to cook on it.<br /><br /><img alt="" class="left" src="http://cdn.shepherdneame.co.uk/sites/default/files/uploads/Blog/blog_half_Smack%2C%20Whitstable%20%2812%29%20%281280x853%29.jpg" style="width: 280px; height: 187px; float: left;" />Father-of-two Charles added: “There is nothing more social than a barbecue, and our ‘bring your own’ evenings at the Old City Bar have proved popular, so I hope they will work just as well in Whitstable. We are hoping to open an outside bar as well, so The Smack really will be the perfect place to come when the sun is shining.”<br /><br />Nigel Bunting, director of retail and tenanted operations, said: “Charles has achieved great success at the Old City Bar in Canterbury, and we are delighted that he has taken on a second Shepherd Neame pub. The refurbishment project at The Smack Inn has given it a fresh new look while retaining its character and atmosphere, and we are sure the pub will continue to go from strength to strength.”<br /><div class="field field-name-addthis field-type-ds field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><div class="sharing-wrapper"><div class="addthis_toolbox addthis_default_style "><a class="addthis_button_facebook_like" fb:like:layout="button_count"></a><a class="addthis_button_tweet"></a><a class="addthis_button_google_plusone" g:plusone:size="medium"></a><a class="addthis_counter addthis_pill_style"></a></div><script type="text/javascript" src="http://s7.addthis.com/js/250/addthis_widget.js#pubid=xa-4fc6036e42d724f9"></script></div> </div></div></div><div class="prev-next clearfix navigation"><div class="nav-previous right"><a href="/blog/redesign-royals-favourite-liqueur">Redesign for Royals&#039; Favourite Liqueur <span class="meta-nav">&raquo;</span></a></div></div><span property="dc:title" content="Seaside Pub Reopens After £100,000 Makeover" class="rdf-meta"></span> Fri, 27 Mar 2015 10:53:28 +0000 M.Farmer 54341 at http://www.shepherdneame.co.uk Redesign for Royals' Favourite Liqueur http://www.shepherdneame.co.uk/blog/redesign-royals-favourite-liqueur <span class="print-link"></span><p class="italic"><strong class="label-inline">Posted:&nbsp;</strong>26 March 2015</p><a href="http://www.shepherdneame.co.uk/shop/grants-morella-cherry-brandy-50cl-bottle" target="_blank"><strong>Grant’<img alt="" class="left" src="http://cdn.shepherdneame.co.uk/sites/default/files/uploads/Brands/Wine/Grant%27s%20Morella%20Cherry%20Brandy.jpg" style="font-size: 13.0080003738403px; line-height: 20.0063037872314px; width: 253px; height: 750px; float: left;" />s Morella Cherry Brandy</strong></a> has unveiled an updated traditional look to reflect its long, illustrious heritage.<br /><br />First produced in 1774 by Thomas Grant in Maidstone, Kent, using the Garden of England’s famed variety of cherry, Grant’s Morella Cherry Brandy is steeped in history. It is mentioned in Charles Dickens’ novel The Pickwick Papers, and was a favourite tipple of Queen Victoria, whose portrait appears on the label.<br /><br />Its popularity with the Royal Family has continued over the years. The liqueur was granted the coveted Royal Warrant from HRH The Prince of Wales in 1998, which is proudly illustrated on the new label design.<br /><br />Shepherd Neame purchased Thomas Grant in 1988, and relaunched Grant’s Morella Cherry Brandy in the 1990s. The rich, cherry red liquid (24% abv), is still made to the same traditional recipe, using only English grain spirit, and was named the Best Liqueur in 1994 at the International Wine and Spirit Competition.<br /><br />Its sleek new bottle now boasts quality cream labels, embossed with traditional gold lettering, scrolls and stylised cherry images, to reflect its quality, heritage and celebrated past.<br /><br />Michael Prior, manager of Todd’s The Wine Company, the wine and spirits division of Shepherd Neame, said: “Grant’s Morella Cherry Brandy is a prestigious, high quality liqueur with an enviable reputation and heritage, and we are pleased with its new packaging, which we feel conveys the unique quality and long history of the product.”<br /><br />A 50cl bottle of Grant’s Morella Cherry Brandy retails at £17.50 and is available to <strong><a href="http://www.shepherdneame.co.uk/shop/grants-morella-cherry-brandy-50cl-bottle" target="_blank">buy online here</a>.</strong><br /><br /><br /><br /><div class="field field-name-addthis field-type-ds field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><div class="sharing-wrapper"><div class="addthis_toolbox addthis_default_style "><a class="addthis_button_facebook_like" fb:like:layout="button_count"></a><a class="addthis_button_tweet"></a><a class="addthis_button_google_plusone" g:plusone:size="medium"></a><a class="addthis_counter addthis_pill_style"></a></div><script type="text/javascript" src="http://s7.addthis.com/js/250/addthis_widget.js#pubid=xa-4fc6036e42d724f9"></script></div> </div></div></div><div class="prev-next clearfix navigation"><div class="nav-next left"><a href="/blog/seaside-pub-reopens-after-100000-makeover"><span class="meta-nav">&laquo;</span> Seaside Pub Reopens After £100,000 Makeover</a></div><div class="nav-previous right"><a href="/blog/shop-pick-ultimate-collection-0">Shop Pick: Ultimate Collection <span class="meta-nav">&raquo;</span></a></div></div><span property="dc:title" content="Redesign for Royals&#039; Favourite Liqueur" class="rdf-meta"></span> Thu, 26 Mar 2015 08:30:00 +0000 M.Farmer 53351 at http://www.shepherdneame.co.uk Shop Pick: Ultimate Collection http://www.shepherdneame.co.uk/blog/shop-pick-ultimate-collection-0 <span class="print-link"></span><p class="italic"><strong class="label-inline">Posted:&nbsp;</strong>25 March 2015</p><h4 style="line-height: 20.0063037872314px;"><span style="font-size: 1.231em; line-height: 20.0063037872314px;">This week's Shop Pick is the </span><a href="/www.shepherdneame.co.uk/shop/ultimate-collection"><span style="font-size: 1.231em; line-height: 20.0063037872314px;">Ultimate Collection</span></a><br /> </h4><h3 style="line-height: 20.0063037872314px;"><strong style="text-decoration: underline;"><a href="http://www.shepherdneame.co.uk/shop/ultimate-collection" style="text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><img alt="" src="http://cdn.shepherdneame.co.uk/sites/default/files/uploads/Blog/one_col_Ultimate%20Collection%20lineup2.jpg" style="width: 600px; height: 168px;" /></a></strong></h3><p><span style="font-size: 13.0080003738403px; line-height: 1.538em;">This 12 bottle mixed case showcases <strong>12 different ales</strong>, including popular favourites such as </span><strong style="font-size: 13.0080003738403px; line-height: 1.538em;">Spitfire</strong><span style="font-size: 13.0080003738403px; line-height: 1.538em;"> and the legendary</span><strong style="font-size: 13.0080003738403px; line-height: 1.538em;"> Bishops Finger</strong><span style="font-size: 13.0080003738403px; line-height: 1.538em;">, as well as the entire Classic Collection - including an </span><strong style="font-size: 13.0080003738403px; line-height: 1.538em;">India Pale Ale</strong><span style="font-size: 13.0080003738403px; line-height: 1.538em;">, the aptly named </span><strong style="font-size: 13.0080003738403px; line-height: 1.538em;">Brilliant Ale</strong><span style="font-size: 13.0080003738403px; line-height: 1.538em;">, a luxurious </span><strong style="font-size: 13.0080003738403px; line-height: 1.538em;">Double Stout</strong><span style="font-size: 13.0080003738403px; line-height: 1.538em;">, and the sumptuous bottle-conditioned beer, </span><strong style="font-size: 13.0080003738403px; line-height: 1.538em;">1698</strong><span style="font-size: 13.0080003738403px; line-height: 1.538em;">.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.538em;">This case of 12 bottles is the </span><strong style="line-height: 1.538em;">perfect gift </strong><span style="line-height: 1.538em;">for any beer fan, or just as a </span><strong style="line-height: 1.538em;">treat to yourself.  </strong><span style="font-size: 13.0080003738403px; line-height: 1.538em;">Go on, you deserve it! </span></p>Also includes some <strong>tasting notes</strong>, so you can taste and assess each ale, just like our Masterbrewers. There are seven beautifully decorated en-suite guest rooms, providing some of the best accommodation in the area.<br /><br /><img alt="" class="right" src="http://cdn.shepherdneame.co.uk/sites/default/files/uploads/pubs/blog_half_Crown%20Inn%2C%20Chislehurst-005.jpg" style="font-size: 13.0080003738403px; line-height: 20.0063037872314px; width: 313px; height: 200px; float: right;" />On the bar, you will find a good range of Shepherd Neame cask ales, including seasonals, and a choice of lagers. The Crown Inn also has an excellent wine list, and is known for its freshly prepared, seasonal dishes.  Food can be served in the bar or restaurant, the menu offering something for all tastes and appetites, from House Specials to Pub Classics, and some inspired vegetarian and fish options.  They also serve an excellent Sunday Roast, with an early bird offer for those who are hungry enough to eat by 12.30!<br /><br /><img alt="" class="left" src="http://cdn.shepherdneame.co.uk/sites/default/files/uploads/pubs/blog_half_crown%20function%20room.jpg" style="width: 268px; height: 200px; float: left;" />The Crown also has a function room which has recently been redecorated, and is looking fabulous. With its own bar and private decking area, and a capacity of up to 70 people, this is an excellent choice for parties and functions, with catering available to suit your requirements.<br /><br />If you fancy a day out with a difference, the Crown Inn is just a few minutes away from <a href="file:///H:/Digital%20Marketing/Pubs/Pub%20of%20the%20week/Published" target="_blank">Chislehurst Caves</a>, where you can take a lamp-lit tour into the dark mysterious passageways - no booking required.<br /><br /><img alt="" class="right" src="http://cdn.shepherdneame.co.uk/sites/default/files/uploads/pubs/blog_half_Crown%20Inn%2C%20Chislehurst.jpg" style="width: 299px; height: 200px; float: right;" />As well as being an excellent destination for a peaceful lunch or drinks with friends, the Crown Inn is far from sleepy, with plenty of regular events. height: 187px; float: right;" />In the main bar area, exposed brickwork on the walls and fireplace creates a more traditional look, along with refurbished, stripped wooden floors. The furniture has been reupholstered, and quirky pieces of bric-a-brac have been introduced to give the pub a rustic feel.<br /><br />The main bar has been completely refitted with new beer fonts and pumps, and a new feature wine display has been introduced. A second bar and snug area has also been created in a previously unused area at the back of the pub, providing a more intimate space for customers.<br /><br /><img alt="" class="left" src="http://cdn.shepherdneame.co.uk/sites/default/files/uploads/Blog/blog_half_Six%20Bells%2C%20Cliffe%203.jpg" style="width: 280px; height: 187px; float: left;" />A new entertainment system has been installed, including two large wall-mounted widescreen TVs showing Sky, along with a new jukebox. The original front corner entrance of the pub has been reopened, and new bespoke signwriting has been added to the exterior.<br /><br />The pub has also expanded its food offer, and will be serving a range of homemade bar snacks and traditional pub meals from 12noon to 8pm, Monday to Saturday, and 12noon to 6pm on Sunday.<br /><br /><img alt="" class="right" src="http://cdn.shepherdneame.co.uk/sites/default/files/uploads/Blog/blog_half_4Six%20Bells%2C%20Cliffe%203.jpg" style="width: 280px; height: 187px; float: right;" />Local dignitaries and residents were invited to the official opening event on Monday, March 9, with the first pint pulled by Parkinson’s disease sufferer John Tucker, who lives in the village and has been a regular at the pub for many years.<br /><br />Licensee Kelly Walker said: “I have been at the pub for just over a year, and John has been a great support and is a really well known character in the village, so I decided he would be the perfect man for the job!”<br /><br /><img alt="" class="left" src="http://cdn.shepherdneame.co.uk/sites/default/files/uploads/Blog/blog_half_Six%20Bells%2C%20Cliffe%202.jpg" style="width: 280px; height: 187px; float: left;" />Shepherd Neame chief executive Jonathan Neame also attended the launch event, and to mark the occasion presented a cheque for £500 to charity Parkinson’s UK.<br /><br />He said: “We are delighted with the improvements made at the pub, which has given it a contemporary look while retaining its unique character. We are sure that the pub will continue to go from strength to strength.”<br /><br />Contact and location details can be found on the <strong><a href="http://www.shepherdneame.co.uk/pubs/rochester/six-bells" target="_blank">pub's website</a></strong>.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div class="field field-name-addthis field-type-ds field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><div class="sharing-wrapper"><div class="addthis_toolbox addthis_default_style "><a class="addthis_button_facebook_like" fb:like:layout="button_count"></a><a class="addthis_button_tweet"></a><a class="addthis_button_google_plusone" g:plusone:size="medium"></a><a class="addthis_counter addthis_pill_style"></a></div><script type="text/javascript" src="http://s7.addthis.com/js/250/addthis_widget.js#pubid=xa-4fc6036e42d724f9"></script></div> </div></div></div><div class="prev-next clearfix navigation"><div class="nav-next left"><a href="/blog/free-coastal-wedding-fair"><span class="meta-nav">&laquo;</span> Free Coastal Wedding Fair</a></div><div class="nav-previous right"><a href="/blog/shepherd-neame-chefs-spring-action">Shepherd Neame Chefs Spring Into Action <span class="meta-nav">&raquo;</span></a></div></div><span property="dc:title" content="Official Relaunch for New Look Village Pub" class="rdf-meta"></span> Fri, 20 Mar 2015 11:29:10 +0000 M.Farmer 53026 at http://www.shepherdneame.co.uk Shepherd Neame Chefs Spring Into Action http://www.shepherdneame.co.uk/blog/shepherd-neame-chefs-spring-action <span class="print-link"></span><p class="italic"><strong class="label-inline">Posted:&nbsp;</strong>19 March 2015</p><p class="italic"><strong class="label-inline">Blog category:&nbsp;</strong><a href="/blog/pubs">Pubs</a>, <a href="/blog/food">Food</a></p><img alt="" class="left" src="http://cdn.shepherdneame.co.uk/sites/default/files/uploads/Blog/blog_half_IMG_0147.JPG" style="width: 147px; height: 220px; float: left;" />Head chefs from our managed houses came together to try out the new spring/summer core menu.<br /><br />More than 20 chefs took part in the two day event, held at a professional kitchen in Ashford, Kent. It was led by Shepherd Neame’s head development chef Simon Howlett, who started by holding a refresher session on topics such as food labelling, stock management, health and safety procedures and other company standards.<br /><br /><img alt="" class="right" src="http://cdn.shepherdneame.co.uk/sites/default/files/uploads/Blog/blog_half_IMG_0292.JPG" style="width: 220px; height: 147px; float: right;" />The chefs were then divided into pairs and given a couple of the new recipes to try out, liaising with Simon over any issues experienced throughout the session. The event finished with the chefs’ pub managers coming along to sample the dishes and offer feedback.<br /><br />Simon said: “We hold these workshops four times a year, to introduce each new seasonal menu to the chefs at our managed houses. <br /><br /><img alt="" class="left" src="http://cdn.shepherdneame.co.uk/sites/default/files/uploads/Blog/blog_half_IMG_0324.JPG" style="width: 220px; height: 147px; float: left;" />“The sessions are also a great networking opportunity for the chefs, allowing them to discuss best practice with each other, and take the opportunity to ask questions about any aspect of their work in a relaxed environment. “We were really pleased with the feedback from the chefs and the pub managers, and the dishes will be introduced at pubs throughout the estate from the end of March.”<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div class="field field-name-addthis field-type-ds field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><div class="sharing-wrapper"><div class="addthis_toolbox addthis_default_style "><a class="addthis_button_facebook_like" fb:like:layout="button_count"></a><a class="addthis_button_tweet"></a><a class="addthis_button_google_plusone" g:plusone:size="medium"></a><a class="addthis_counter addthis_pill_style"></a></div><script type="text/javascript" src="http://s7.addthis.com/js/250/addthis_widget.js#pubid=xa-4fc6036e42d724f9"></script></div> </div></div></div><div class="prev-next clearfix navigation"><div class="nav-next left"><a href="/blog/official-relaunch-new-look-village-pub"><span class="meta-nav">&laquo;</span> Official Relaunch for New Look Village Pub</a></div><div class="nav-previous right"><a href="/blog/shop-pick-brewery-tour-certificate">Shop Pick: Brewery Tour Certificate <span class="meta-nav">&raquo;</span></a></div></div><span property="dc:title" content="Shepherd Neame Chefs Spring Into Action" class="rdf-meta"></span> Thu, 19 Mar 2015 14:45:01 +0000 M.Farmer 52956 at http://www.shepherdneame.co.uk Shop Pick: Brewery Tour Certificate http://www.shepherdneame.co.uk/blog/shop-pick-brewery-tour-certificate <span class="print-link"></span><p class="italic"><strong class="label-inline">Posted:&nbsp;</strong>18 March 2015</p><img alt="" class="left" src="http://cdn.shepherdneame.co.uk/sites/default/files/uploads/ToursFunc/ETW%202015%20logo.jpg" style="width: 150px; height: 150px; float: left;" />This week for English Tourism Week our Shop Pick is a <strong><a href="http://www.shepherdneame.co.uk/shop/brewery-tour-gift-certificate-two-gift" target="_blank">Brewery Tour Gift Certificate</a></strong>.<br /><br />The certificate entitles the recipient to a brewery tour for two people, plus a gift to take away at the end of the tour.
