Pub of the Week: The Wheelwrights Arms, Matfield

Posted: 31 October 2012

The Wheelwrights Arms at Matfield (Kent village of the year 2010), is a quintessentially English country pub in the Weald of Kent, with a real fire and exposed oak beams. In a supremely beautiful rural setting, the pub is on many popular  alking routes. Visitors are sure of a warm welcome from landlady Gem, and her husband Rob, who have run the Wheelwrights since May 2011.

The pub is fast becoming known for its gastro cuisine with a different take on pub classics featuring regularly on the menu. Rob and his kitchen team vary the menu seasonally - with much imagination - and also produce their own bread, butter, pork scratchings, chutneys and preserves.

But it's as much about the 'pub' as the 'gastro' here. Besides serving good food in a laid back, comfortable setting there are several popular events that take place in the pub. The Wheelwrights 'Homemade Pub Quiz' every first and third Thursday evening is always well subscribed. Live music normally plays on the last Friday of the month, and whilst not a 'sports bar' rugby union internationals are often shown, including 6 Nations, and the upcoming Autumn Tests.

The Wheelwrights serves food Tuesdays to Sundays and booking is advised. To see the pub’s menus and for more information, take a look at the website
