Pub of the week: The Compasses Inn, Crundale

Posted: 12 August 2014

The Compasses Inn at Crundale, near Canterbury is a great example of a traditional, rural country pub.  Nestled in the Downs between Canterbury and Ashford, it is an ideal destination for walkers, cyclists, couples and families alike – plus of course those who are simply thirsty for a pint of real ale.  Husband and wife team Rob & Donna Taylor describe the pub as a "muddy wellies and fine food kind of place", and their love for the pub shines through in both the pub’s appearance and atmosphere.

Situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, The Compasses is not only in a stunning rural location, but also perfectly situated for access to the finest local meats from nearby farms and game estates, as well as fruits and vegetables from local producers.  Head Chef Rob Taylor - formerly of the renowned Samphire restaurant in Whitstable, takes pride in preparing his varied menus, which offer everything from light lunches to full evening meals, with everything freshly prepared on the day.

In recognition of their excellent dining offering, the pub was awarded the Restaurant of the Year Award at Shepherd Neame’s Pub of the Year Awards 2014, and have also been nominated for ‘Kent Life’ Pub of the Year.  The team were praised for their skilful use of local and seasonal produce to create a delicious, beautifully presented menu, with a special mention also given to the friendly service provided by staff, and the restaurant’s relaxed ambience.

The Compasses Inn also has an exceptionally large, family friendly garden, with play equipment for the kids, as well as a marquee and barbeque area for summer events.  The pub offers a selection of cask ales from Shepherd Neame, as well as guest ales, and a carefully chosen wine list.

The pub are particularly fond of summer events, the next of which is their Summer Vintage Fair on the 25th August – back following the huge success of the event last year – with classic vehicles, a bouncy castle, vintage stalls, and live music from Scarlett Rae, if you needed a reason to visit, this is it.

The Compasses Inn is located in the hamlet of Crundale in rural Canterbury – detailed directions can be found on their website.
