Shepherd Neame’s award-winning visitor centre has been shortlisted for the Beautiful South Excellence Awards 2012-2013. The awards celebrate the best in tourism across the South East, with Britain’s oldest brewer one of five finalists in the Small Attraction category.
The visitor centre has much to offer, with two-hour daytime tours including a taste of malted barley, the smell of Kentish hops, a visit to a recreated cooper’s workshop and a tutored tasting of Kentish ales and speciality lagers. Evening events, such as the guided tour followed by a superb four-course Beer Dinner – a meal of freshly prepared local ingredients with beer to match each course – are hugely popular and fill up fast.
Family owned Shepherd Neame is hoping for a repeat of the 2010 Beautiful South Tourism Awards where it won gold for Small Visitor Attraction of the Year. In 2011 the brewery claimed silver at Flavour of the South East and, in the same year, Shepherd Neame took gold for Small Visitor Attraction of the Year at the Visit England Awards for Excellence, Best Little Treasure at the Group Travel Awards, and was highly commended for Flavour of The South East at the Beautiful South Tourism Awards.
Visitor Centre manager Graham Hukins said, “We are delighted to have made the shortlist for this prestigious competition and hope that we’ll have to make space in our trophy cabinet.
“We are passionate about sharing the unique history of Britain’s oldest brewer so to know that people love to come here and learn more about Shepherd Neame makes us very proud.
“We’re coming into the festive season now, but we’re still running tours most days in November and can offer a 20 per cent discount on midweek tours. We have Yuletide tours with the chance to try traditional mulled ale throughout December and our Christmas Beer and Food Evening on Saturday December 15 is booking up fast.”
The winners of the Beautiful South Awards will be announced on November 28 at an evening of celebration at Denbies Wine Estate, Surrey, with Heart FM’s Toby Anstis presenting the awards.
