This weekend marks the beginning of two weeks of Folk music in Rochester and Hastings. Hastings Jack-in-the-Green event takes place every early May Bank Holiday and this year runs from the 2nd – 5th. The following weekend the town plays host to the Hastings Folk Festival, running from May 6th – 10th. Medway’s Sweeps festival is an annual May Bank Holiday event that this year runs from May 3rd – 5th.

Medway’s annual Sweeps Festival recreates the festivities relished by local chimney sweeps at their traditional holiday, celebrated on May 1st. Their festival included the Jack-in-the-Green ceremony, a seven foot creature that used to awaken at dawn on Blue Bell Hill.

Rochester pub The Two Brewers will be joining in this year’s festivities by hosting live folk music all weekend, featuring The Broadside Boys and The Ian Petrie Band on Saturday May 3rd, Larkspur and Tombstone Liquor on Sunday May 4th and Ash Mandrake on Monday May 5th. Further details can be found here.

Meanwhile, down by the coast Hastings oldest pub, The Stag Inn, will be celebrating its own Jack-in-the-Green festivities with more Folk Music, featuring the Rattlebag Big Sing Around and live band The Dirty Spoons on Saturday 3rd May and The Tatsmiths on Sunday May 4th.

The music doesn’t stop there though; Tuesday May 6th is the start of Hastings Folk Festival running until May 10th. The Stag Inn will feature more live music with an open Folk session on May 6th and an open Bluegrass session on May 7th. On the 8th the pub will host an open song session featuring Rattlebag, Hastings Shanty Singers and The Bourne Valley Male Voice Choir.

Friday May 9th sees Blakeley and Son takes to the stage playing good time Celtic and Irish tunes and finally on Saturday 10th The Stag will feature Good Squeeze and Stone Junction. You can find more details here

Make sure you don’t miss out on the festivities this fortnight!
