Would you serve a robust Rioja with the Rolling Stones or a mellow Merlot with Manilow? Customers at the Regency Tavern in Brighton will find that pairing wine to food is a simple task compared to the complexity of matching wines with classic rock and pop songs.
The pub is hosting an evening of Wine Cabaret at 8.30pm on Thursday 25th October, featuring vocal group The Songeliers, part of live entertainment specialist OzCabaret. The group will be pairing different wines with their own version of songs by artists including The Eagles, Elkie Brooks, INXS and Nancy Sinatra.
Licensee Paul Smith, who runs the Regency on a tenancy with family brewer Shepherd Neame, said: “We have a great reputation for live entertainment, but the Wine Cabaret takes us to a new level. Wine and music are both subjects which people get deeply passionate about, so the evening has already prompted a great deal of debate amongst our regulars.”
The wines have been selected by Roshna Ahmad, Shepherd Neame wine sales development manager. She said; “Fortunately, I am a musician myself, although matching wine to music is definitely a first for me.
“It’s been an interesting process, and it will be fascinating to see how well my wine choices work with the songs.”
During the evening, each wine will be introduced to the audience, who will sample it while The Songeliers regale them with their choice of songs to go with the wine. The audience can discuss the pairings with the players as well as making their own tasting notes.
Roshna’s final wine list is being kept under wraps until the evening, but includes a mix of New and Old World wines and a range of styles. Jess Edmeades of OzCabaret says: “Although we’ve paired Roshna’s wine with familiar songs such as Never Tear Us Apart by INXS and Cracklin’ Rosie by Neil Diamond, we have three female vocalists and our instruments include violin, piano and accordion, so our interpretations are very different to the originals.
“The wine list for the Regency sounds delicious, so we can't wait to try them and to incorporate them into our work.”
